Spinal Cord Compression

Causes of a spinal cord compression:

Vertebral

  • Spondylosis
  • Metastases
  • Prolapsed disc
  • Osteomyelitis, TB
  • Trauma

Extradural

  • lymphoma, metastases
  • abscesses
  • haematoma
  • hydatid cyst etc.
Epidural spinal cord compression (ESCC) scale (Maseda et al, 2019)

Intradural

  • Extramedullary
    • Meningioma
    • Neurofibroma
    • Lipoma etc.
  • Intramedullary
    • Tumour – ependymoma, glioma
    • Syringomyelia

Extradural and extramedullary intradural lesions tend to cause loss of local pain / tenderness with usually rapidly progressive bilateral signs.

Spinal cord lesions: intramedullary, intradural-extramedullary, or extradural (Weill Cornell Brain and Spine Center)

Intramedullary lesions are more often benign and slowly progressive, predominantly unilateral.
