Causes of osteomalacia
- vitamin D deficiency
- dietary deficiency
- lack of ultraviolet light exposure – especially dark-skinned people who spend little time in the sun
- malabsorption – gastrointestinal, hepatic, and pancreatic disease
- abnormal metabolism of vitamin D
- chronic renal failure (CRF)
- vitamin-D-dependent Rickets – 1-hydroxylase deficiency
- anticonvulsant osteopathy
- phosphate depletion
- renal tubular acidosis
