The Inferior Vena Cava

In the intertubercular (iliac tubercles) plane, commencing 2.5 cm right of the midline, the surface projection of the inferior cava ends 2.5 cm to the right of the xiphisternal joint.

The confluence of the two common iliac veins behind the right common iliac artery at the level of lumbar vertebra L5, the inferior vena cava runs up to the right of the aorta to travel beyond the aortic opening lying on the right crus behind the bare area of the liver and extends to the central tendon of the diaphragm at the level of T8.
