Complications from Renal Replacement Therapy – Haemodialysis

  • hypotension: 30-50%
  • muscle cramps
  • disequilibrium syndrome
  • hypoxaemia – cardiopulmonary disease
  • arrhythmias
  • bleeding
  • acquired cysts (40-50%) – 80% > 3 years
  • pericarditis – worse prognosis

Complications of Continuous Ambulatory Peritoneal Dialysis (CAPD)

  • peritonitis – 50% discontinue ≤ 2 years (60% of these in the first year)
  • excessive weight gain
  • hernias
  • pancreatitis
