Foot Drop – causes

Cause of  a foot drop:

  • common peroneal nerve palsies
  • sciatic nerve palsies
  • L4 / L5 root lesion
  • peripheral motor neuropathy
  • distal myopathy
  • Motor Neurone Disease

Differentiate by testing for ankle jerk:

  • absent in L5 lesion
  • normal in common peroneal nerve palsies
  • increased in UMN lesion
